Self-policing calms demonstrations for Freddie Gray in Baltimore



BALTIMORE — The intersection of North and Pennsylvania avenues became a de facto rallying point this week after violence erupted in the area following widespread demonstrations over the death of Freddie Gray

On Friday night, it was once again the place people gathered, but this time for a largely celebratory purpose after State’s Attorney for Baltimore City Marilyn Mosby announced criminal charges against six police officers earlier in the day.

Demonstrations at the particular location, scarred by looting and fires on Monday night, ranged from heated confrontations to a street party atmosphere, but at the core of it all, self-policing from members of the community diffused the tensions between police and protesters. Read more…
